Ray Miller's Journey in Ohio Politics
Ray Miller has had a long career helping the people of Ohio. He went to the Ohio State University. After college, he worked for President Carter's government.
Serving in the Ohio House
In 1982, Ray Miller was first elected to the Ohio House of Representatives. This is one part of Ohio's law-making body. He was re-elected several times, serving from 1983 to 1993. During this time, he became the leader of the Legislative Black Caucus. This group works to make sure laws help all people.
In 1993, Mr. Miller left the House to start a group that helps create new ideas for public policy. But he returned to the Ohio House in 1998. He won re-election again in 2000.
Moving to the Ohio Senate
In 2002, Ray Miller decided to run for the Ohio Senate. This is the other part of Ohio's law-making government. He won the election for the 15th District. He started his new role on January 3, 2003, and was re-elected in 2006.
In 2008, Mr. Miller became a leader in the Senate. He was chosen to be the minority leader. This means he was the main leader for his political party in the Senate. After the 2008 elections, he decided to step down from this leadership role.
Ray Miller could not run for the Senate again in 2010 because of "term limits." This means there's a rule about how many times a person can be elected to the same job. After leaving the Senate, he started a news journal called The Columbus African American. He is still the publisher and chairman of this journal. He also served on the board of trustees for Central State University for six years.
