Ray Simpson was born on January 15, 1954. He is an American singer. He is famous for being a lead singer in the disco group Village People. Ray played the "Cop" character in the band for over 30 years. He joined the group in August 1979. He took over from the first lead singer, Victor Willis. Ray had already been a backup singer for the Village People. This helped him join the band quickly when they needed a new singer.
Ray also appeared in the Village People movie. It was called Can't Stop the Music and came out in 1980.

Ray grew up in The Bronx, a part of New York City. He went to City College of New York. There, he studied English and also learned about music.

Ray's sister is Valerie Simpson. She was part of a famous music duo called Ashford & Simpson. Valerie and her husband wrote and produced many hit songs. They worked with stars like Marvin Gaye and Diana Ross. They also helped other artists like Chaka Khan.
Ashford & Simpson also had their own successful songs. These included "Found A Cure" from 1979. Another big hit was "Solid" in 1984. Ray Simpson performed with his sister's duo for many years. Before joining the Village People, Ray also released his own album. It was a solo recording called Tiger Love.
