Raymond Devos (French: [dəvɔs]) was a famous French comedian. He was born on November 9, 1922, and passed away on June 15, 2006. He was known for being a humorist, a stand-up comedian, and even a clown! People especially loved his clever wordplay, called puns, and his funny, dream-like comedy style, known as surreal humour.
Early Life
Raymond Devos was born in Mouscron, Belgium. This town is very close to the French border. His parents were French, and when he was two years old, his family moved to Tourcoing, France. Seven years later, they moved again to Paris.
During World War II, like many young men, he had to go to Germany to work. When he returned to France, he studied acting and mime at the Étienne Ducroux school. There, he met another famous mime artist, Marcel Marceau. In 1948, he started performing as part of a comedy group.
Comedy Career
Raymond Devos's career really took off in the 1950s. He started writing and performing his own one man shows. He even opened for the famous singer Maurice Chevalier.
Even though he started as a clown and sometimes juggled, he became famous for how well he used the French language. His unique style of surreal humour and smart puns made him very respected. People who spoke French all over the world loved his shows.
Devos also appeared in some movies. He was a main character in Alejandro Jodorowsky's short film Les têtes interverties in 1957. He also had a small role in Jean-Luc Godard's movie Pierrot le Fou in 1965. In this film, he played a man who couldn't stop thinking about a mysterious love song.
He performed his last show in 1999 at the Paris Olympia theater in Paris. He passed away in Saint-Rémy-lès-Chevreuse, France.
Nationality
Because Raymond Devos was born in Belgium, some people were often confused about his nationality. News reports sometimes called him a "Belgian comic" or a "French and Belgian comic." His family name, Devos, also sounds Dutch or Flemish.
However, his parents were French, and he grew up in France. He always respected Belgium, his birth country. He once joked that he was still a "fake Belgian," showing his humorous side even about his background.
