The Story of Re-Animated
Jimmy Roberts (Dominic Janes) is a 12-year-old boy who finds it hard to say "no." Because of this, his friends often take advantage of him. This happens a lot during his class trip to Gollyworld. Gollyworld is an amusement park filled with cartoon characters created by a famous artist named Milt Appleday (Fred Willard).
Jimmy's Big Problem
At the park, Jimmy misses out on rides because his friend Craig (Micah Karns) tells other kids that Jimmy will hold their stuff. Craig then suggests that Jimmy look for Milt Appleday's frozen brain. They say it's hidden in a ride called "Tux's Arctic Adventure." Jimmy, as usual, agrees even though he doesn't want to.
Inside the ride, Jimmy bumps into Milt's clumsy son, Sonny (Matt Knudsen). Sonny is also trying to find his dad's brain. Jimmy quickly runs away. While escaping, he accidentally gets hit by a train!
A Brainy Accident
Jimmy ends up in the park's hospital. There, the doctors have Milt Appleday's brain in a cooler. They decide to put Milt's brain into Jimmy's head! Luckily, Jimmy is fine after the operation. The doctors even saved his "personality gland," so he's still himself.
But now, Jimmy can see all of Appleday's cartoon characters in real life! No one else can see them, though.
New Friends and New Fame
With help from his crush, Robin (Eunice Cho), who is also Craig's sister, Jimmy learns why the cartoons are not popular anymore. It's because Sonny accidentally ruined their shows with his bad ideas. Golly Gopher, who used to be the most popular cartoon, is very sad.
Golly thinks that with Jimmy now in charge, he can become a star again. Jimmy becomes the new president of Appleday Pictures because Sonny was fired. Jimmy becomes super popular, but he no longer has time for school or his friends.
Sonny's Sneaky Plan
Meanwhile, Sonny moves into Jimmy's house. Jimmy's dad lets him stay because Sonny tricks the family. Sonny has dinner with them and meets Jimmy's alien sister, Yancy (Rhea Lando). All this time, Sonny is trying to get Milt's brain out of Jimmy's head. If Jimmy loses the brain, he would die.
Sonny plans to change Crocco's train to have dangerous devices that will hurt Jimmy and get the brain. But Sonny yells his plan out loud, and Yancy hears him!
Jimmy Learns a Lesson
Eventually, Robin tries to tell Jimmy that the cartoons are using him, just like everyone else used to. But Jimmy doesn't believe her. He says Robin only liked him because he had Milt's brain. He leaves for his TV debut.
Robin then meets Sonny, who says he has to get rid of her since she knows his plan. At the TV studio, Jimmy tells Golly that being president isn't what he really wanted. Golly gets angry and shouts that Jimmy can't say no to anyone. Jimmy finally realizes Robin was right. He quits his president job on TV!
The Big Rescue
Sonny still wants the brain. He ties Robin to the train tracks! Jimmy and the cartoon characters, even Golly (who apologizes), rush to save her. Golly even turns Jimmy into a cartoon "Knight in shining armor" for a moment.
Jimmy saves Robin by going inside the train and breaking the engine. Sonny's plan fails. Jimmy dresses up as Milt to hide from Sonny. Sonny is distracted because he misses his father. Yancy saves Jimmy just in time by using her power to teleport.
Robin and Jimmy go back to Craig's house. Craig was planning a party for Jimmy. Everything is fixed between them. However, the partygoers saw Jimmy on TV talking about friendship. They thought he was silly for giving up fame, so they leave the party.
In the end, Jimmy is leaving for school. Sonny still wants the brain and tries to grab Jimmy's head with a device. He almost gets him, but misses. Sonny laughs, and Yancy tells him to be quiet.
Golly Gopher: Hero in Train-ing
This is a special cartoon short made by Renegade Animation. It's a bonus feature on the Re-Animated DVD. A small part of it was shown in the movie. The main characters are Golly Gopher, Dolly Gopher, Crocco the crocodile, and Tux the penguin. In the story, Golly saves Dolly from a train driven by Crocco.
