Read Fletcher (born around 1829 – died November 21, 1889) was an important American figure. He was a politician, a lawyer, and helped start and edit a newspaper called the Pine Bluff Graphic. He served in the government of Arkansas and was also a soldier during the American Civil War.

Read Fletcher's Early Life and Education

Read Fletcher was born in Nashville, Tennessee around 1829. He later moved to Arkansas. He began studying law by "reading law," which means he learned by working with an experienced lawyer.

He also attended Cumberland University for a short time. However, he left before finishing his studies there.

A Career in Law and Public Service

Fletcher became a lawyer, helping people with legal issues. He also took on several important public roles.

Serving as Postmaster

In 1856, Read Fletcher was appointed Postmaster of Pine Bluff, Arkansas. This meant he was in charge of the local post office. He held this position for a few months.

Representing Jefferson County

Later, Fletcher became a member of the Arkansas House of Representatives. He represented Jefferson County, Arkansas. He served in this role from November 1866 to April 1868. As a representative, he helped make laws for the state.

A Voice in the Newspaper

Read Fletcher was also involved in journalism. He helped start a newspaper called the Pine Bluff Graphic. He worked as an editor for the paper. This role allowed him to share news and opinions with the community.
