Reading (pronounced RED-ing) is a city in Hillsdale County, located in the state of Michigan, USA. In 2020, about 1,095 people lived there.
The city is found along M-49. It is surrounded by Reading Township. Even though they are next to each other, the city and the township are managed separately.

History of Reading
Reading was first settled in 1835. A group of local people started the community. It was first called Basswood Corners because of the many basswood trees at its main crossroads.
On December 14, 1840, a post office was opened and named Reading. The name came from the township, which was named after Reading, Pennsylvania. In 1852, the community was officially mapped out, or platted, around a new sawmill. Reading got its own railway station in 1869. It became an official village in 1873 and then a city in 1934.

Reading is located in the state of Michigan. The U.S. Census Bureau says the city covers about 1.01 square miles (2.62 square kilometers) of land. There is no water area within the city limits.

In 2010, the city of Reading had 1,078 people living there. There were 392 households and 281 families. The city had about 1,067 people per square mile.

The city of Reading has its own school district called Reading Community Schools. This district also serves parts of the townships nearby.

- Charlotte E. Gray (1873–1926), an author.
- Keith Lincoln, a professional football player in the National Football League. He was born in Reading.
- Benjamin H. Southworth, a college football player, doctor, and surgeon. He was also born in Reading.
