Realtogue Fort is an ancient circular fort, also known as a ringfort or "rath." It is a special historical site in County Meath, Ireland, protected as a National Monument. Imagine it as a very old, round fence made of earth, built long ago to protect people and their homes.
Where is Realtogue Fort Located?
Realtogue Fort is found in County Meath, Ireland. It's about 3.5 kilometers (2 miles) northwest of a town called Kentstown. You can also find it about 1.6 kilometers (1 mile) north of the River Nanny. The River Nanny is a smaller river that flows into the famous River Boyne.
What Does Realtogue Fort Look Like?
This ringfort has an oval shape, not perfectly round. It measures about 49 meters (161 feet) from northwest to southeast. From northeast to southwest, it is about 41 meters (135 feet) wide. Around the outside, there's a ditch, which is called a fosse. This ditch would have added extra protection.
Inside the fort, near the eastern side, there are signs of an old house. This house site measures about 9 meters (30 feet) by 5 meters (16 feet). There's also a gap where people would have entered the fort. However, there isn't a raised path (causeway) leading across the ditch at this entrance.
