Early Life and Musical Start
Rebeca Nuez Suarez grew up in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Spain. Her family was full of musicians! She started learning music with her dad when she was just three years old. When she turned six, her uncle began teaching her the violin. Both her uncle and aunt are professional violinists. They play in the Orquesta Filarmónica de Gran Canaria, a big orchestra in the Canary Islands.
Rebeca started performing on stage when she was only seven. She made her first solo performance at age fourteen. This was with the Joven Orquesta de Gran Canaria. Her parents also played traditional folk music. They encouraged Rebeca to join them in many concerts as a teenager.
Education and Career Highlights
Rebeca continued her violin training in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. She studied with her uncle at the Academia de la Orquesta Filarmónica de Gran Canaria. After high school, Rebeca moved to the Netherlands at age seventeen. She studied at Codarts University for the Arts in Rotterdam. Later, she earned her Bachelor's Diploma from the Conservatorium Maastricht.
Rebeca then moved to London to continue her studies. She became a postgraduate student at the Royal College of Music. She even received a special scholarship to help her study there.
Performing Around the World
Rebeca has performed in many different countries. These include Germany, China, France, and Italy. In May 2017, she was a special guest artist. This was at a charity event in Cannes, France. It happened during the famous Cannes Film Festival.
Rebeca is very interested in new classical music. She enjoys working with composers who are creating music today. In 2018, she released a recording of a piece called “Alone.” It was written for solo violin by Spanish composer Laura Vega.
That same year, a group called Young Classicals worked with Rebeca. They help young musicians in Europe. They recorded her playing music by famous composers like Eugene Ysaÿe and Maurice Ravel.
Making History with Music Videos
In November 2019, Rebeca released a music video called "The Furies." It featured her playing a part of Eugene Ysaÿe's Violin Sonata Nr. 2. This video made history! It was the first classical music video by a Spanish artist to be shown on Vevo. Vevo is a popular platform for music videos. This showed how Rebeca was helping classical music reach new audiences.
Continued Studies and Awards
Rebeca started working on her doctoral degree in London. She studied at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. From 2023, she joined the doctoral program at the School of Music in the University of Leeds. Her project received an award in 2022.
In summer 2023, Rebeca was named one of BBC Music Magazine’s Rising Stars. This means she was recognized as a promising young artist. In 2024, she won the 'Best Classical' artist award at the Premios Canarios de la Música. She had also been nominated for this award in 2023.
