Early Life and School

Rebecca Catherine Gibney was born in Levin, New Zealand. She grew up in Wellington, which is the capital city of New Zealand.

She went to Wellington Girls' College for her schooling. After finishing high school, she moved to Australia when she was 19 years old.

Acting Career Highlights

Rebecca Gibney started her career as a model. Then, she began acting on TV in New Zealand. Her first role was in a series for kids and teens called Sea Urchins from 1980 to 1984.

Starting in Australian TV

In 1985, Rebecca moved into Australian television. She played Julie Davis in the children's show Zoo Family. Later, she became very popular as Emma Plimpton. Emma was a mechanic in the drama series The Flying Doctors. In 1990, she starred in the mini-series Come In Spinner.

Comedy and Drama Roles

In 1991, Rebecca starred in the Channel Nine comedy show All Together Now. She left that show in 1993. After that, she appeared in another TV series called Snowy.

A special character, Dr. Jane Halifax, was created just for Rebecca. This was for the show Halifax f.p.. The first episode of Halifax f.p. aired in 1994. The show continued with many TV movies until 2002. She also acted in mini-series like Kangaroo Palace (1997) and The Day of the Roses (1998).

Later TV and Film Work

From 2002 to 2003, Gibney had a role in Stingers. From 2003 to 2006, she starred with Claudia Karvan in three TV movies called Small Claims. She played a character named Chrissy.

In 2004, she was in a TV movie based on Stephen King's book Salem's Lot. She also appeared in King's 2006 mini-series Nightmares and Dreamscapes. In 2006, she played Lydia in the drama series Tripping Over. In 2007, she had a small part in the film Clubland.

Rebecca also hosted four seasons of a New Zealand show called Sensing Murder (2006–2010). On this show, psychics tried to help solve unsolved murder cases. In 2008, she was a producer and actress in the New Zealand film The Map Reader.

Recent Successes

From 2008 to 2013, Rebecca played Julie Rafter in the popular TV show Packed to the Rafters. Her role was very well-liked. She won the Gold Logie award in 2009 for this show. In 2010, she played the main role in the TV movie Wicked Love: The Maria Korp Story.

She starred in the 2012 movie Mental with Toni Collette. In 2014, Rebecca produced and starred in a new crime drama TV film, The Killing Field. She played a detective solving a teenage girl's murder. Winter, a follow-up series, aired in 2015.

In 2020, Rebecca played Jane Halifax again in Halifax: Retribution. In 2021, she joined the cast of Under the Vines. In 2024, she appeared in the Stan series Prosper.

In September 2024, it was announced that Rebecca would return to theatre. She will be in the play Circle Mirror Transformation in 2025. This will be her first theatre role in almost 20 years. In November 2024, she started appearing in the crime drama A Remarkable Place to Die. In December, she was cast as the lead in a new New Zealand series called Happiness.

Personal Life

Rebecca Gibney was married to Irwin Thomas from 1992 to 1995. Irwin Thomas is also known as Jack Jones, who was the lead singer of the band Southern Sons.

In November 2001, she married Richard Bell, who is a production designer. They have one son together. Rebecca currently lives in Dunedin, New Zealand.

Rebecca Gibney has won and been nominated for many TV awards. These include the AFIs and the Logies.

Early Awards

She won her first award in 1990. This was an AFI Award for Best Actress for her role in Come In Spinner. She also won a Logie award in 1991 for Most Outstanding Actress for the same show.

In 1992, she was nominated for two Logie awards. These were for Most Popular Actress and Most Popular Light Entertainment / Comedy Female Performer. Both nominations were for her role in All Together Now.

Halifax f.p. Awards

Her role as Dr. Jane Halifax in Halifax f.p. earned her many nominations. She was nominated for Most Popular Actress at the Logies five times (1996, 1997, 1998, 1999, 2001). She was also nominated for Most Outstanding Actress at the Logies three times (1998, 1999, 2000). At the AFI's, she was nominated for Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role in a Television Drama twice (1998, 2000).

Packed to the Rafters and Gold Logie

Rebecca's role in Packed to the Rafters was very popular. She won the 2009 Gold Logie award for it. She also won the 2009 Most Popular Actress award. She was nominated for the Gold Logie again in 2010 and 2011. She also received nominations for Most Popular Actress in 2010, 2011, and 2012. In 2009, she was nominated for Best Lead Actress in a Drama at the AFI Awards.

Other Honors

Her hometown of Levin, New Zealand, honored her in their Walk of Fame. This started in 2021. There is a special plaque for her in Oxford Street, Levin.
