Early Life and Education
Rebecca Catherine Gibney was born in Levin, New Zealand. She grew up in Wellington, which is the capital city of New Zealand.
She went to Wellington Girls' College for her schooling. After finishing high school, she moved to Australia when she was 19 years old.
Acting Career
Rebecca Gibney started her career as a model. She then began acting on TV in New Zealand. Her first TV role was in a show for young people called Sea Urchins from 1980 to 1984.
Early TV Roles
In 1985, Rebecca started acting in Australian television. She played Julie Davis in the children's series Zoo Family. Later, she became very popular as Emma Plimpton, a mechanic, in the drama series The Flying Doctors. In 1990, she also starred in a mini-series called Come In Spinner.
From 1991 to 1993, she was in the TV comedy show All Together Now. After leaving that show, she acted in another series called Snowy.
Becoming Dr. Jane Halifax
The character of Dr. Jane Halifax in Halifax f.p. was created just for Rebecca. This show started in 1994 and featured her as a crime psychologist. She starred in 21 TV movies as Dr. Jane Halifax until 2002. She also appeared in other mini-series like Kangaroo Palace in 1997 and The Day of the Roses in 1998.
Later Roles and Awards
From 2002 to 2003, Rebecca had a role in Stingers. She also co-starred in a series of TV movies called Small Claims from 2003 to 2006. In 2004, she was in a TV movie based on Stephen King's book Salem's Lot. She also appeared in King's mini-series Nightmares and Dreamscapes in 2006.
Rebecca hosted four seasons of a New Zealand show called Sensing Murder from 2006 to 2010. In this show, psychic investigators tried to solve old murder cases. She also helped produce and starred in the 2008 film The Map Reader.
From 2008 to 2013, Rebecca played Julie Rafter in the popular TV show Packed to the Rafters. Her role in this show was very well-liked. She won the prestigious Gold Logie award in 2009 for her work on the show.
In 2012, she starred in the movie Mental with Toni Collette. In 2014, Rebecca produced and starred in a new crime drama TV film called The Killing Field. She played a detective solving a murder. A follow-up series, Winter, aired in 2015.
In 2020, Rebecca returned to her role as Jane Halifax in Halifax: Retribution. In 2021, she joined the cast of Under the Vines. She also appeared in the series Prosper in 2024. In September 2024, it was announced that Rebecca would return to the theatre for the first time in almost 20 years in the play Circle Mirror Transformation. In November 2024, she began appearing in the crime drama series A Remarkable Place to Die. In December 2024, she was cast as the lead in the New Zealand series Happiness.
Personal Life
Rebecca Gibney was married to Irwin Thomas from 1992 to 1995. She later married production designer Richard Bell in November 2001. They have one son together. Rebecca currently lives in Dunedin, New Zealand.
She holds citizenship in both New Zealand and Australia.

Awards and Recognition
Rebecca Gibney has won and been nominated for many awards during her acting career. These include awards from the AFIs and the Logies.
She won her first award in 1990. It was an AFI Award for Best Actress for her role in Come In Spinner. She also won a Logie award for Most Outstanding Actress in 1991 for the same show.
Her role as Dr. Jane Halifax in Halifax f.p. earned her several nominations. She was nominated for Most Popular Actress at the Logies multiple times. She was also nominated for Most Outstanding Actress and Best Performance by an Actress at the AFIs.
For her popular role as Julie Rafter in Packed to the Rafters, Rebecca won the 2009 Gold Logie. She also won the Most Popular Actress award in 2009. She received many other nominations for this role in the following years.
In 2021, her hometown of Levin, New Zealand, honored her. They added a special plaque for her in Oxford Street as part of their Walk of Fame. This celebrates her achievements.
