Red Lion is found where two important roads meet: Delaware Route 7 and Delaware Route 71. It's situated northwest of Delaware City and southwest of New Castle.
The Story Behind the Name
The community of Red Lion got its name from a very old, historic building. Long ago, there was a famous colonial tavern in this area called the "Red Lion." Taverns were like inns or hotels where travelers could stop for food, drinks, and a place to sleep.
This community also gave its name to a historical area known as the Red Lion Hundred. In Delaware, a "hundred" was an old way of dividing up land for administrative purposes, similar to how counties are used today.
