Delaware Route 9 is the main road that goes through Delaware City. It runs through the city on 5th Street. South of the city, DE 9 crosses over the Chesapeake and Delaware Canal on the Reedy Point Bridge. North of Delaware City, DE 9 connects with Delaware Route 72. Route 72 can take you to other major roads like U.S. Route 13 and Delaware Route 1.

If you need to travel by bus, DART First State provides bus service to Delaware City on Route 44. This route goes north to the Christiana Mall.

Delaware City is also important for boats because it's at the east end of the Chesapeake and Delaware Canal. This canal lets boaters travel between the Delaware River to the east and the Chesapeake Bay to the west.

There's also the Forts Ferry Crossing. This is a passenger ferry that takes people from Delaware City to Fort Delaware on Pea Patch Island and even to Fort Mott in New Jersey.
