Red Rock Pass is a special place in the Centennial Mountains of Beaverhead County, Montana. It's a mountain pass, which is like a low spot or a natural gateway through a mountain range. This pass is about 7,152 feet (2,180 meters) high.
It sits right on the Continental Divide. The Continental Divide is like an imaginary line that runs through North and South America. On one side, all the rain and melted snow flow towards the Pacific Ocean. On the other side, they flow towards the Atlantic Ocean or the Arctic Ocean. So, Red Rock Pass helps decide where water goes!
The pass separates Beaverhead County in Montana from Fremont County, Idaho. You can travel through it on a rough gravel road.
A Bit of History
Red Rock Pass has been a pathway for a long time. On August 20, 1877, a group of Nez Perce people used this pass. They were traveling towards Yellowstone National Park during a conflict known as the Nez Perce War. This happened shortly after a fight called the Battle of Camas Creek. The pass was an important route for them on their journey.
