Redbird Smith is part of the larger Fort Smith, Arkansas-Oklahoma Metropolitan Statistical Area. This is a group of cities and towns that are closely connected. The community was named after a very important person, Redbird Smith (who was Cherokee). He started a group called the Keetoowah Nighthawk Society in what was then called Indian Territory. He also created a special place here for important ceremonies.
