TV Globo (also known as Globo) is a huge television network in Brazil. It was started by Roberto Marinho on April 26, 1965. Globo is part of a bigger media company called Grupo Globo. It's the biggest TV network in Latin America and one of the largest in the world.

Globo is famous for making many telenovelas (soap operas). It produces thousands of hours of shows and news every year. The network reaches almost everyone in Brazil. It has won many International Emmy Awards for its great shows.

Globo's main offices are in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Its big production studios, called Estúdios Globo, are also in Rio. Globo has 5 stations it owns and 122 partner stations across Brazil. It also has international channels like TV Globo Internacional. In 2007, Globo started broadcasting in HD.

The story of TV Globo began long ago. In 1925, the newspaper O Globo was created in Rio de Janeiro. Then, in 1944, Rádio Globo started broadcasting. It became a very important radio station.

In 1963, the Brazilian President approved a request for Rádio Globo to start a TV channel. So, on April 26, 1965, Rede Globo de Televisão began broadcasting in Rio de Janeiro. Its first show was a children's program. Soon after, it showed the first live Holy Mass.

The next year, Globo bought another TV station in São Paulo. This helped the network grow and become more popular across Brazil. In 1966, Globo also covered a big flood in Rio de Janeiro, showing its commitment to news.

Growing the Network

Globo started building its national network in 1967. It partnered with TV Gaúcha in Porto Alegre. This station is still one of Globo's oldest partners today. Other stations in cities like Uberlândia and Goiânia soon joined. In 1968, TV Globo Minas opened in Belo Horizonte.

Famous News Shows

On September 1, 1969, a very important news show started: Jornal Nacional (National News). It was the first live national newscast in Brazil. Its theme music and the "Boa Noite" (Good night) closing became very famous.

Another news show, Jornal Hoje (Today's News), started in 1971. It first aired in Rio de Janeiro and later became a national midday newscast. Globo also broadcast its first FIFA World Cup in 1970. That same year, the network's famous "Plim-Plim" sound, heard during commercial breaks, first appeared.

Globo's Quality Standard

In the 1970s, Globo created its "Quality Standard" for programming. This included airing two soap operas, followed by Jornal Nacional, and then more shows. This plan helped Globo become the most-watched TV network in Brazil.

In 1975, Globo introduced its current logo, designed by Hans Donner. It shows a globe with a TV screen shape cut out, and another globe inside. This logo has changed a bit over the years but kept its main design. Globo was also one of the first networks to use computer animation for its on-air look.

The children's series Yellow Woodpecker Ranch started in 1977. It was very popular and had different versions over the years.

Globo at the Top (1980s)

By 1980, Rede Globo was 15 years old and was the top TV network in Brazil. It celebrated with special shows and marathons of popular programs.

Many new and popular shows started in the 1980s. Vale a Pena Ver de Novo (It's Worth Watching Once Again), which re-airs old dramas, began in 1980. Globo Rural, a news show about rural life, also started that year.

More Hit Shows

In 1982, the children's show Balão Mágico (Magic Balloon) became a big hit. It featured a musical group of children. In 1983, Vídeo Show began, giving viewers a look behind the scenes of Globo's shows. It aired for many years.

Also in 1983, local news shows called Praça TV started. These shows gave news specific to different cities and states. A national morning news show, Bom Dia Brasil (Good Morning Brazil), also began.

In 1984, Globo started its Supercine movie slot on Saturdays. The network also covered the "Diretas Já" campaign, where many Brazilians asked for direct elections for president.

20th Anniversary and New Stars

1985 was Globo's 20th anniversary. It was a great year with special shows and the debut of Corujão, a late-night movie block. The network also launched Criança Esperança (Children's Hope), a charity telethon that helps children.

In 1986, the famous TV host Xuxa Meneghel joined Globo with her show, Xou da Xuxa (Xuxa's Show). It was a huge success with children and aired for many years.

In 1989, Domingão do Faustão (Faustão's Big-Sunday), a popular Sunday variety show, began. It helped Globo become the leader in Sunday TV ratings. Another new show was the Temperatura Máxima movie block.

By the end of the 1980s, Jornal Nacional and Jornal da Globo got new looks and presenters. William Bonner and Fátima Bernardes became a famous news team.

Into the 1990s

In 1990, Globo celebrated its 25th anniversary. It aired special programs and new shows like Escolinha do Professor Raimundo. Globo also covered the 1990 FIFA World Cup.

In 1991, Globosat, Globo's cable service, was born. It started with a few channels and now has many more. Globo also became the official network for The Simpsons in Brazil.

The 1990s saw Globo covering big events like the 1992 Barcelona Olympics and the 1994 FIFA World Cup. Sadly, in 1994, the nation mourned the sudden death of Formula One hero Ayrton Senna, which Globo covered extensively.

Towards the New Century

In 1995, Globo turned 30. It opened new studios called Estúdios Globo and launched a new youth show, Malhação. Globo also started its own news channel, Globo News, in 1996.

Even though other networks like SBT and Record became more popular, Globo regained its top spot. This was thanks to new shows and its coverage of the 1996 Summer Olympic Games and the 1998 FIFA World Cup. Globo also started the "Brazil 500" project to prepare for Brazil's 500th anniversary of European discovery.

The New Millennium (2000s)

The year 2000 was special for Globo, Brazil, and Brazilian television. Globo celebrated its 35th anniversary. It launched new variety shows like Caldeirão do Huck and Programa do Jô. Globo also became a leader in reality TV with shows like Big Brother Brasil and No Limite.

Big Hits and Changes

In 2001, the popular telenovela O Clone debuted. It was a huge success in Brazil and was sold to many countries around the world. Globo also covered the September 11 attacks in the United States.

Globo was the national broadcaster for the 2002 FIFA World Cup. In 2003, Roberto Marinho, the founder of Globo, passed away at age 98. His three children took over the leadership of the network.

In the mid-2000s, Globo faced more competition from other networks. However, its telenovelas like Da Cor do Pecado and Senhora do Destino continued to get high ratings. Globo also covered the 2004 Summer Olympics and the 2006 FIFA World Cup.

In 2007, Globo became the official broadcaster for the 2007 Pan-American Games held in Rio de Janeiro. The network also brought back its famous "Plim Plim" sounds. In 2008, Globo updated its logo again to fit the new 16:9 aspect ratio of digital TV.

Changes in 2021

In January 2021, Fausto Silva announced he would leave his long-running show Domingão do Faustão. Luciano Huck took over the Sunday slot, and Marcos Mion took over Huck's old show.

Due to the pandemic, Globo stopped recording some shows in March 2021. In April, Globo sold its record label, Som Livre, to Sony Music. The network also started making its soundtracks available on Deezer and Globoplay.

In May 2021, Globo got the rights to broadcast all matches of the 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifiers. This was a big win after losing rights to other football events to other networks.

In September 2021, it was announced that Malhação, a popular teen soap opera, would end after 27 seasons.

Globo's Look and Identity

Globo's first logo in 1965 looked like a star with the number 4. In 1976, the current Globo logo was created by Hans Donner. It shows a globe with a TV screen shape and another globe inside.

The logo has changed over the years. It started in blue and white, then became metallic in 1982, and 3D in 1983. In 1986, it got its famous rainbow colors inside the screen. This rainbow logo stayed mostly the same until 2021. In 2008, the screen shape became rectangular to match modern TV screens. In 2014, the metallic look was replaced with a simpler white gloss.

In 2021, Globo changed its name to "TV Globo" and introduced a new logo. The new logo has a softer, shaded look and uses different color schemes instead of the rainbow. This new look will be seen more and more in 2022.
