History of Redstone: A Unique Mining Town

Redstone was started in 1898 by a rich businessman named John Cleveland Osgood. He owned many coal mines and wanted to create a special place for his workers. Osgood believed in "welfare capitalism." This meant he wanted to provide good living conditions for his employees.

He built 84 cozy cottages and a large 40-room inn for his coal miners. These homes were very modern for their time, with indoor plumbing and electricity. He also built bathhouses, a clubhouse with a library and a theater, and a school. Many of these original Swiss-style cottages are still used as homes today.

Cleveholm Manor: The Redstone Castle

A very important building in Redstone is Cleveholm Manor, often called "Redstone Castle." This huge, fancy house has 42 rooms. John Cleveland Osgood built it for his second wife, Alma Regina Shelgrem, who was a Swedish Countess.

The Castle was designed by famous architects from New York. Building it started in 1897 and finished in 1901. The Castle was part of a big property that also had homes for servants, a gamekeeper's lodge, a carriage house, and a greenhouse. The Castle still has most of its original furniture from when it was built!

The historic inn in Redstone is now a popular resort. People can stay there all year round.
