Redwood Meadows is a special kind of community called a townsite in Alberta, Canada. It is the only townsite officially recognized by the Alberta government as of August 2020.
What makes Redwood Meadows unique? It acts much like a regular town in Alberta, but it has two big differences:
- It is located inside the Tsuu T'ina Nation 145 Indian reserve.
- The land it sits on is leased, not owned, by the residents.
The community is managed by a Town Council. This council works under a special agreement with the Tsuu T'ina Nation. Redwood Meadows is found along Highway 22. It is about 20 kilometers west of Calgary. It is also 18 kilometers south of Cochrane and 5 kilometers northeast of Bragg Creek. The townsite is about 1,250 meters (4,100 feet) above sea level. It covers an area of about 1.62 square kilometers (0.6 square miles).
A Look at Redwood Meadows' Past
In the early 1970s, the land where Redwood Meadows is now was leased. It was leased to Sarcee Developments Ltd. (SDL). This company is fully owned by the Tsuu T'ina Nation. The main lease started in 1974 and will last for 75 years, ending in 2049. SDL then leases individual plots of land to the people who live there. These smaller leases also end in 2049.
How Redwood Meadows Gets Services
Redwood Meadows shares many services with nearby towns. This happens through different agreements. The townsite has water, sewer, parks, and roads. It also has a volunteer fire department. A golf course, the Redwood Meadows Golf and Country Club, is located right in the townsite.
