Reggie Cross's College Basketball Journey
Reggie Cross was a talented player at South Plantation High School in Plantation, Florida. Many top college teams wanted him to play for them. But first, he played his first two years of college basketball at Miami Dade. During his second year there, he was named to the All-State Team. Basketball Weekly also said he was one of the best junior college players ready to transfer.
In 1986, the University of Hawaii at Manoa offered Reggie a scholarship. They had tried to recruit him when he was in high school. He needed to spend the 1986–87 school year at Leeward Community College. During this time, he didn't play basketball. He worked full-time as a courier to support himself while taking classes. This helped him become eligible to play for Hawaii.
Playing for the Hawaii Rainbow Warriors
Reggie started playing for the Hawaii Rainbow Warriors in the 1987–88 season. He scored an average of 15.7 points per game. In his final year, the 1988–89 season, Reggie helped Hawaii reach the postseason for the first time since 1974. He averaged 18.6 points per game that season.
Because of his great play, Reggie was chosen for the All-WAC First Team. He was also named Hawaii's most outstanding player in both seasons he played for them. After a strong performance at an All-Star Game in Japan, NBA teams started to notice him more. He was invited to several NBA tryout camps.
