In the 1880s, many duck farms grew in Speonk. However, most of these farms did not last long after the year 1900.

The name Speonk comes from a Native American word. It means "high place." In 1897, a train company called the Long Island Rail Road even mentioned Speonk in its catalog. They joked that the name "certainly sounds like the call of a frog."

How Remsenburg Got Its Name

Some people in the community wanted to change the name from Speonk to "Remsenburg." This was to honor a kind resident named Charles Remsen. He had given money to build a new Presbyterian church. Today, both names are still used. Each name refers to different parts of the community.
