Playing Career
Starting at Grêmio
Renato was born in Guaporé, Brazil. He started his career at a small club called Esportivo. Soon, the bigger club Grêmio signed him.
In 1983, he had a fantastic year with Grêmio. He helped them win the Copa Libertadores, which is a major South American tournament. Then, they won the Intercontinental Cup by beating a team from Germany. Renato scored two goals in that final game. This victory made Grêmio famous around the world.
Moving to Other Clubs
In 1987, Renato joined Flamengo and won the Brazilian championship. The next year, he moved to Italy to play for Roma. But he didn't stay long and returned to Flamengo. Back in Brazil, he helped Flamengo win another trophy, the Copa do Brasil, in 1990.
The King of Rio
Renato is well-remembered for his time at Fluminense. In 1995, he played in a championship final against Flamengo. He scored the winning goal with his belly, which is very unusual! This goal made him a hero to Fluminense fans. They started calling him the "King of Rio."
He played for Flamengo a few more times before he stopped playing. In total, he played 210 games and scored 64 goals for the team.
Playing for Brazil
Renato played 41 times for the Brazil national team and scored five goals.
In 1986, he was chosen to play in the FIFA World Cup. However, he was removed from the team for breaking a team rule. His friend and teammate, Leandro, was with him. The coach let Leandro stay, but not Renato. To show his loyalty, Leandro quit the team too. He said he would not play if Renato could not.
Managerial Career
After he stopped playing, Renato became a football manager, or coach. He has coached many famous Brazilian clubs.
Coaching Fluminense and Vasco da Gama

Renato has coached Fluminense many times. His first time as a full-time coach was in 2002. In 2007, he led the team to win the Copa do Brasil. This was his first big trophy as a manager. The next year, his team almost won the Copa Libertadores but lost the final game.
He also coached another Rio de Janeiro team, Vasco da Gama, two times.
Success with Grêmio

Renato had his most successful time as a manager with Grêmio, the same club where he was a star player. He returned to coach them in 2016.
In 2017, he led Grêmio to win the Copa Libertadores. This was a huge achievement because he had also won it as a player with the same team. Under his leadership, Grêmio also won several other titles. He became the longest-serving manager in Brazilian football before leaving in 2021.
In March 2019, Grêmio honored him by putting up a statue of him near their stadium.
Coaching Flamengo and Returning to Grêmio
In 2021, Renato became the coach of Flamengo. He led them to the final of the Copa Libertadores, but they lost to another Brazilian team. He left the club later that year.
He returned to coach Grêmio for a fourth time in 2022. He helped them win more championships before leaving in December 2024.
