About the Artist
José Requena Nozal was born in Zaragoza, Spain. This was on October 25, 1947. He grew up in the El Arrabal area of the city.
Early Exhibitions
His very first art show was in 1975. It took place at the Provincial Museum of La Rioja. Here, he showed paintings that focused on everyday people. He used oil paints for these early works.
In 1982, José took part in a big art contest. It was called the "National Painting Contest for Young Artists." The newspaper ABC organized this event.
Awards and Recognition
In 1996, José Requena Nozal won a top award. He received first prize at the "II Summer Salon of New York City." This award was given by the Goya Art Gallery in New York. He could not go to the ceremony himself. So, someone else collected the prize for him.
Since 1997, he has been a member of an important group. This group is called the Spanish Association of Painters and Sculptors.
In 2016, the city of Dénia supported a special art show. It was a look back at José's art from 1980 to 2015. The show was named "Hemeroskopeion 1980-2015." It was held at the Centre d'Art l'Estació.
Art Techniques
A special part of José's art is encaustic painting. This is an old method using heated wax with colors. He likes to create complex scenes with many details. His encaustic works show different feelings and a strong sense of humanity. They mix real-life ideas with deep emotions.
Around 2004, José's art style changed a lot. He started using abstract expressionism or tachism. These styles focus on feelings and energy, not realistic images. In these works, he uses encaustic, acrylic paint, and even gold leaf.
