Res Gestae
A surviving copy of the Res Gestae

The Res Gestae Divi Augusti is a special message from Augustus, the first Roman emperor. Its name means "Deeds of the Divine Augustus" in Latin. It's like his life story and a list of all his achievements. Augustus wanted everyone to know what he did for Rome during his time as emperor.

Where Was the Res Gestae Found?

The original message was carved onto two bronze pillars. These pillars were placed in front of Augustus's mausoleum (his tomb). Sadly, these original pillars are now lost.

But don't worry! Many copies of this text were made. They were spread all over the Roman Empire. The most famous copy was found in Ankara, Turkey. This copy is almost complete and is written in both Greek and Latin. Historians believe Augustus wrote several versions of the Res Gestae during his life. He kept updating it until the final version, which was finished around 14 AD, the year he died.

Is the Res Gestae Fully Accurate?

While the Res Gestae is a very important historical source, it's not completely accurate. Augustus didn't exactly lie, but he left out some important details. For example, he didn't mention some harsh actions he took against his enemies. He also referred to his rival, Mark Antony, simply as "a faction" (meaning a group against him).

The message talks a lot about the money Augustus spent. He spent money on the people of Rome and on the whole empire. He also often wrote that he had "restored the republic." This means he claimed to have brought back the old Roman Republic. He also said he only got his important titles because the people and, most importantly, the Senate fully supported him.

What Are the Main Sections?

The Res Gestae Divi Augusti is usually divided into four main parts. Each part focuses on a different aspect of Augustus's life and rule:

  • Political career: This section talks about all the important jobs and positions Augustus held during his life.
  • Gifts to the People: This part describes all the money, food, and public games Augustus gave to the Roman people.
  • Military achievements: This section lists his successes in battles and wars, showing how he expanded and secured the Roman Empire.
  • Political summary: This final part summarizes his political actions and how he gained power and influence.
