Reservoir 2 facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Reservoir 2 is a large, man-made lake located in the northern part of New Rochelle. It sits right on the border between New Rochelle and Eastchester in Westchester County, New York.

What is Reservoir 2?

This reservoir was built a long time ago, in 1892. It was created by building a special wall, called a dam, across the Hutchinson River. This dam is known as the "Reservoir 2 Dam."

How the Dam Was Built

The dam is made from a mix of stone (masonry) and earth. It stands about 25 feet tall, which is like a two-story building. The dam stretches for 550 feet, which is longer than a football field!

Size and Capacity

Reservoir 2 covers an area of about 18.3 acres. That's a lot of space for water! It can hold a huge amount of water, about 37,000,000 gallons. When water needs to be released, it can flow out very quickly, up to 800 cubic feet per second. The city of New Rochelle owns and manages this important reservoir.

Where is Reservoir 2 Located?

Reservoir 2 is quite close to another body of water called Lake Innisfree, which is also known as Reservoir 1. It's only about 0.1 miles south of Lake Innisfree.

Its Original Purpose

In the past, the water from Reservoir 2, along with water from another place called Reservoir 3, was very important for New Rochelle. It was pumped from a special station into the city's water pipes. This water then supplied the homes and businesses in the northern parts of New Rochelle.
