What is Reservoir 3?
Reservoir 3 was built a long time ago, in 1908. It was created by building a large wall, called a dam, across the Hutchinson River. This dam is known as the New Rochelle "Reservoir 3 dam."
The Dam That Holds the Water
The dam is made of earth, which means it's built from soil, rocks, and clay. It stands about 30 feet (about 9 meters) tall. It stretches for 450 feet (about 137 meters) across the river. This strong dam holds back the river's water, forming the reservoir.
How Big is the Reservoir?
Reservoir 3 covers an area of about 30 acres. That's like 30 football fields! It can hold a huge amount of water, about 128 million gallons. To give you an idea, that's enough water to fill many, many swimming pools. The reservoir's main job is to store water for the area.
How Reservoir 3 Helps People
This reservoir is an important part of the water system for New Rochelle. It acts as a storage tank for the "high-level system." This means it holds water that can be sent to homes and businesses in the higher parts of the city.
Water Flow and Pumping
When Reservoir 3 gets too full, its extra water flows directly into another nearby water body called Reservoir 2. In the past, water from both Reservoir 3 and Reservoir 2 was pumped. This pumping station pushed the water into pipes. These pipes then carried the water to homes in the northern parts of New Rochelle.
The River and Its Surroundings
The Hutchinson River flows into the upper end of Reservoir 3. This area where the river enters can be a bit swampy. Just above the reservoir, on its east side, there's a smaller stream. This stream feeds into the main Hutchinson River. Its source is near the parkway, a few hundred feet to the east. About half a mile upstream from the reservoir, the Hutchinson River Parkway crosses over the river. This crossing is located between Reservoir 1 and Reservoir 3.
