The reticulate leaf-toed gecko (Hemidactylus reticulatus) is a type of gecko that lives on land. These geckos are active at night and eat insects. You can find them in rocky areas of South India. During the day, they hide under stones to stay safe. When night comes, they come out to find food and move around.
About the Reticulate Leaf-Toed Gecko
This gecko has a short, rounded head. Its body and legs are also short. A cool thing about geckos is their toes! These geckos have special toes that help them climb. Their toes have small plates underneath that help them grip surfaces.
Their skin is covered with tiny bumps called granules. They also have small, round bumps called tubercles mixed in. The gecko's tail is round and gets thinner towards the end. It has small scales and rings of larger bumps.
What Does It Look Like?
The reticulate leaf-toed gecko is usually brown. It has a pattern of darker lines that look like a net, which is why it's called "reticulate." Many of its bumps are whitish. The underside of its body is whitish, but its throat might have some brown lines.
Where Do They Live?
You can find the reticulate leaf-toed gecko in southern India. This includes the states of Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Telangana, and Andhra Pradesh.
These geckos really like rocky places. They live on rocky hills and outcrops, from areas near the sea all the way up to over 1000 meters high. The first place this gecko was officially found was Kollegal, in what was then Mysore State.
