Asha Kelunni (born July 8, 1966), known by her stage name Revathi, is a famous Indian actress and director. She is best known for her work in Tamil and Malayalam movies. She has also acted in Telugu, Hindi, and Kannada films.
Revathi was one of the most successful actresses in South Indian cinema. She has won many awards for her acting. This includes three National Film Awards and seven Filmfare Awards South. In 2022, she also won the Kerala State Film Award for her role in the movie Bhoothakaalam.

Early Life and Discovery
Revathi was born in Kochi, Kerala. Her father, Kelunni, was a major in the Indian Army. Her mother's name is Lalitha Kelunni.
Her journey into acting started in a surprising way. When she was in school, she participated in a fashion show. A group photo from the show was put on the cover of a popular Tamil magazine. The famous director Bharathiraja saw her picture. He was looking for a new actress for his movie Mann Vasanai, and he chose her for the role.
Acting Career
Starting in Films
Revathi's first movie was the Tamil film Mann Vasanai in 1983. It was a huge success and ran in theaters for a long time. For her performance, she won a special award from Filmfare. That same year, she made her first Malayalam film, Kattathe Kilikkoodu, which was also a big hit.
She soon began acting in Telugu movies as well. In 1984, she starred in the Tamil film Kai Kodukkum Kai with the famous actor Rajinikanth. She played a strong character who was a blind survivor of a crime. She was known for playing relatable and powerful female characters.
Becoming a Star
A major turning point in her career was the 1986 Tamil film Mouna Ragam, directed by Mani Ratnam. In the movie, she played Divya, a strong-willed girl who grows into a mature woman. This role made her very popular.
She also starred with another famous actor, Kamal Haasan, in the 1986 movie Punnagai Mannan. This film was a big hit and helped establish her as a top actress in Tamil cinema. In 1988, she won her first Filmfare Award for Best Actress for the Malayalam film Kakkothikkavile Appooppan Thaadikal.
Success in the 1990s
The 1990s were a very successful time for Revathi. She won the Best Actress Award for the 1990 film Kizhakku Vaasal. One of her most praised performances was in the 1991 Malayalam comedy Kilukkam.
She also started acting in Hindi films. Her first Hindi movie was Love (1991), where she starred with Salman Khan. In 1992, she won a National Film Award for Best Supporting Actress for the Tamil film Thevar Magan. She continued to win awards, including another Filmfare Award for the movie Marupadiyum in 1993.
Recent Work and Directing
Revathi continues to act in movies. Audiences have seen her in Hindi films like Margarita with a Straw (2014) and 2 States (2014). She also appeared in the Tamil film Pa Paandi (2017) and the Malayalam film Virus (2019). In 2022, she played the mother of Major Sandeep Unnikrishnan in the movie Major.
Besides acting, Revathi is also a talented director. She has directed three movies: Mitr, My Friend, Phir Milenge, and Salaam Venky.
Personal Life
Revathi married director Suresh Chandra Menon in 1986. They separated in 2002, and their divorce was finalized in 2013.
In 2018, Revathi shared that she has a daughter named Mahee.
Life Outside of Films
Revathi is a trained Bharatanatyam dancer. She started learning dance when she was seven years old. In 1979, she had her arangetram, which is a dancer's first public performance.
She is also involved in social work. She supports several organizations that help people, such as the Banyan, Ability Foundation, Tanker Foundation, and Vidyasagar. She has also been a jury member for important film festivals, like the International Film Festival of India.
