The Rhinella atacamensis, often called the Vallenar toad or Atacama toad, is a type of toad that lives only in Chile. This special toad is found along the Pacific coast, from Paposo in the Antofagasta Region down to Las Chilcas in the Valparaíso Region.
It lives in desert areas that have some Mediterranean weather, including the Chilean matorral. You can usually find these toads in or near oases and streams, which are like small rivers.

Where Vallenar Toads Lay Eggs
Vallenar toads need water to have their babies. They lay their eggs in places with permanent water, like pools that never dry up. This includes water tanks used for farm animals, small streams, and even larger rivers.
What Vallenar Toads Eat
Like many toads, the Vallenar toad is a carnivore. This means it eats other small animals. They mostly hunt insects and other tiny creatures they can find in their habitat.

Why the Vallenar Toad Needs Help
Even though there are many Vallenar toads in some places, their overall numbers are going down. In fact, they have completely disappeared from some areas where they used to live. Because of this, the Vallenar toad is listed as a Vulnerable species. This means it could become extinct if we don't protect it.
Threats to the Vallenar Toad
Several things are making it hard for the Vallenar toad to survive:
- Long droughts: These are long periods with very little rain, which dry up the water sources the toads need.
- Water pollution: Dirty water from human activities can harm or kill the toads.
- Taking surface water: When people take too much water from streams and rivers for their own use, there's not enough left for the toads.
- Human activities: Things like mining, farming, raising livestock (like cows and sheep), and growing trees for timber can destroy the toad's habitat or pollute its water.
Protecting the Vallenar toad means protecting its water sources and natural home.
