Rhoose Cardiff International Airport railway station facts for kids
Rhoose Cardiff International Airport railway station is a train station in southeast Wales. It helps people get to Cardiff Airport and the village of Rhoose. A special shuttle bus takes passengers from the station right to the airport building.
The station is on the Vale of Glamorgan Line. It is about 18.5 kilometres (11.5 miles) west of Cardiff Central. Trains from here go towards Bridgend, passing through Barry and before Llantwit Major. The station first opened on 12 June 2005. Transport for Wales runs the train services. This station is part of the Valley Lines network, which is a train system for Cardiff and nearby areas.
A Very Long Name
When this station reopened, it got a new name. Before it closed in 1964, it was just called "Rhoose." Now, it has the longest name for a train station in the UK. This is true for both English and Welsh names.
In English, the name has 33 letters (not counting spaces). In Welsh, it's Maes Awyr Rhyngwladol Caerdydd Y Rhws. This name has 28 letters. In Welsh, some letter pairs like dd, ng, and rh count as single letters.
You might have heard of Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch railway station. That village was given a very long name on purpose. However, the train station there is usually called "Llanfairpwll" or "Llanfairpwllgwyngyll." The super long name is not used on official train information.
There was another long station name in the past. Before 2007, Golf Halt was called "Gorsafawddachaidraigddanheddogleddollônpenrhynareurdraethceredigion." This name was made up to try and beat Llanfairpwllgwyngyll. It was on a special heritage railway line.
