Llantwit Major railway station is a train station located in the small town of Llantwit Major, South Wales. It sits on the Vale of Glamorgan Line. The station is about 18 miles (29 kilometers) west of Cardiff Central. Trains from here travel towards Bridgend, passing through Barry and Rhoose. The station we see today opened on 12 June 2005. This happened when passenger train services started running again between Barry and Bridgend.

All passenger train services at Llantwit Major are run by Transport for Wales. These services are part of the Valleys & Cardiff Local Routes network.

History of Llantwit Major Station

The First Station (1897-1964)

Llantwit Major was one of the first five stations to open on this railway line. That was back in 1897. Originally, the station had four railway tracks running through it. When the line first opened, the village of Llantwit Major was south of the station, separated by fields. But over time, the town grew. Now, the station is almost in the middle of Llantwit Major.

The original station had two platforms. Each platform had an extra loop line for trains. There was a large red brick station building on the platform where trains headed away from Cardiff. The other platform had a smaller shelter for passengers.

Goods Yard and Royal Visit

The station also had a goods yard. This was on the same side as the main station building. It included a loop line and a brick shed for storing goods. More tracks were added around 1900 to handle more goods.

The station stopped regular passenger services in 1964. This was part of a big change where many train services across the country were stopped. The very last passenger train to use the old station was special. It was the royal train on 25 June 1965. The Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh were on board. They were on their way to an event at Atlantic College. Later, they got back on the train to travel to Port Talbot. There, the Queen opened a new building called the Afan Lido.
