Ricardo Gomes Raymundo (born December 13, 1964) is a famous Brazilian footballer and manager. He played as a strong central defender for 14 years. His main teams were Fluminense, Benfica, and Paris Saint-Germain.
Ricardo Gomes also played for the Brazilian national team in the 1980s and 1990s. He even played in the 1990 World Cup. After his playing career, he became a successful football manager in Brazil and France.

Playing Career: A Strong Defender
Ricardo Gomes started his professional football journey in his hometown of Rio de Janeiro. He joined Fluminense Football Club and quickly became a key player. With Fluminense, he won the state league, called Campeonato Carioca, three times in a row. He also helped them win the Brazilian national league in 1984.
Moving to Europe
In 1988, Ricardo Gomes moved to Portugal to play for S.L. Benfica. He joined with his teammate Valdo. They both helped Benfica win the Portuguese league title in their first season. Ricardo Gomes was known for his amazing ability to score goals with his head. He scored 17 goals during his time there, helping Benfica win another league title in 1991.
After his time in Portugal, Ricardo Gomes and Valdo moved to France in 1991. They joined Paris Saint-Germain F.C. There, Ricardo Gomes won four more titles. This included the French first division title in 1994. He returned to Benfica in 1995 for a short time. He helped them win the Portuguese Cup before he retired from playing in 1996 at age 31.

World Cup and Olympic Games

After retiring as a player, Ricardo Gomes immediately started coaching. His first job was with Paris Saint-Germain. He led them to win the French Cup in 1998.
Coaching in Brazil and France
He then returned to Brazil, where he managed several teams. He even coached the Brazilian Olympic team for a while. Later, he went back to France to coach FC Girondins de Bordeaux and AS Monaco FC.
In 2009, Ricardo Gomes became the coach of São Paulo FC. In 2011, he moved to CR Vasco da Gama. He led Vasco da Gama to win their first-ever Brazilian Cup that year.
Health Challenge and Return
In August 2011, Ricardo Gomes faced a serious health challenge during a match. He needed medical attention and took time off to recover. After more than a year, he returned to football as a technical director for Vasco da Gama in 2012.
He continued his coaching career, leading Botafogo to win the Campeonato Brasileiro Série B in 2015. He also had another coaching period with São Paulo FC and later with Al-Nassr FC in Saudi Arabia. In 2018, he returned to coach Bordeaux again.
