Ricciotti Garibaldi's Early Life
Ricciotti was born in Montevideo, a city in Uruguay. He was named after Nicola Ricciotti, a person who was executed for trying to free Italy. Ricciotti spent his younger years living in different places. These included Nice in France, Caprera (an island in Italy), and England.
Fighting Alongside His Father
Ricciotti Garibaldi was a soldier, just like his father. He took part in several important battles:
- In 1866, he fought in the Battle of Bezzecca.
- In 1867, he was part of the Battle of Mentana.
- In 1870, he joined his father's group during the Franco-Prussian War. They helped France. During this war, Ricciotti's group captured a Prussian flag. This was the only Prussian flag lost during the entire war.
Life After the Wars
After his military adventures, Ricciotti tried to start businesses in America and Australia. However, these plans did not work out.
He then became a politician. He served in the Italian Parliament from 1887 to 1890.
Later Military Actions
Ricciotti Garibaldi continued to fight for freedom and justice.
- In 1897, he joined the Greek Army in the Greco-Turkish War (1897). He fought alongside other Italian volunteers, known as Garibaldines, against the Ottoman Empire.
- He also took part in the First Balkan War.
Ricciotti's Family
Ricciotti Garibaldi had six children with his wife, Harriet Constance Hopcraft. Five of his sons became soldiers. They fought in World War I.
- Two of his sons, Bruno (1889-1914) and Costante (1892-1915), sadly died during battles in the Argonne forest.
- His son, Peppino Garibaldi, also became a well-known soldier.
