Biography
Early Life and Joining the Army
Richard Barrett was born in County Mayo, Ireland, in 1838. When he was older, he moved to the United States. He settled in a city called Buffalo, New York.
In Buffalo, Barrett decided to join the United States Army. He became part of Company A in the 1st U.S. Cavalry Regiment.
Military Service and the Medal of Honor
By 1872, Richard Barrett had become a First Sergeant. This is a high rank for an enlisted soldier.
On May 23, 1872, his unit was in the Arizona Territory. Barrett bravely volunteered to lead a charge. This was against a group of Tonto Apaches at a place called Sycamore Canyon.
His actions were seen as very courageous. He was recommended for the Medal of Honor. He officially received this special award on April 12, 1875.
Later Life and Passing
After he retired from the Army, Barrett moved to Washington, D.C.. He lived there until he passed away.
Richard Barrett died on March 20, 1898. He was 60 years old. He was buried at the United States Soldiers' and Airmen's Home National Cemetery.
