Richard Beckett (born June 18, 1772 – died July 28, 1809) was an English sportsman who played cricket. He was also a brave soldier, serving as a captain in the Coldstream Guards during the Napoleonic Wars.
Richard Beckett's Cricket Career
Richard Beckett was born in Leeds, England, in June 1772. He was the son of John Beckett.
He played in nine important cricket matches, known as first-class cricket, between 1804 and 1807. He played three matches for the famous Marylebone Cricket Club. He also played three matches for teams representing England.
In total, Richard Beckett scored 120 runs in his nine matches. His highest score in a single game was 34 runs.
Serving His Country: Richard Beckett's Military Life
In January 1800, Richard Beckett joined the Coldstream Guards. This is a special part of the British Army. He started as an ensign, which is a junior officer rank.
He fought in the Napoleonic Wars, which were big conflicts across Europe. He saw action in several places, including Egypt, Germany, and Denmark. He also served in the Peninsular War, which took place in Spain and Portugal.
Richard Beckett was killed in action during the Peninsular War. This happened on July 28, 1809, during the Battle of Talavera in Spain. At that time, he was a captain.
He was the very first first-class cricketer to die while serving in the military.
A Memorial to a Hero
Richard Beckett's death is mentioned in important history books about the Peninsular War. He died alongside his friend, Captain Samuel Walker. They both fell bravely during the Battle of Talavera.
A special memorial was built for Beckett and Walker. It is located in St Peter's Parish Church in Leeds. The memorial honors their service to their country. It reminds people of their bravery in battles in Egypt, Germany, Denmark, and Portugal.
The inscription on the monument says they "fell in the prime of life at the glorious battle of Talavera." This shows how much their hometown respected them.
