Richard Bowdry, a pioneering race car driver

Richard Bowdry, born on April 25, 1947, is a pioneering African-American stock car driver from South Florida. He raced in the 1970s and 1980s, a time when very few Black drivers competed in stock car racing. He was one of the first to break barriers in this sport.

Even though people of color have contributed to auto racing for a long time, the sport has faced challenges in becoming more diverse. To help with this, NASCAR started a program called Drive for Diversity in 2004. This program aims to bring more minority fans, drivers, and crew members into racing.

Richard Bowdry, along with others, helped lead the way for more diversity in a sport that was mostly known for "white Southerners." He showed great commitment and passion, inspiring many and opening doors for new generations of race car drivers.

In 1976, Bowdry's #86 stock car made its first appearance in the Thunder Car Class at the Palm Beach Fairgrounds Speedway in West Palm Beach, FL. He later raced at South Florida's Hialeah Speedway, which is now known as the "old" Hollywood Speedway.

Bowdry became a well-known figure in the racing world. Many people knew him for his positive attitude and competitive spirit. He eventually changed his car number from #86 to #43. Richard Bowdry continued his racing journey in South Florida for more than two decades before he retired in 1991.
