Richard Barrow Cadbury (born August 29, 1835 – died March 22, 1899) was an English businessman. He was famous for making chocolate and for his charity work. Richard was the second son of John Cadbury. John Cadbury started the famous Cadbury's cocoa and chocolate company. The family were Quakers, a Christian group known for their simple lifestyle and social justice work.
A Sweet Family Business
Richard Cadbury joined the family business with his younger brother George in 1861. They took over the company from their father. Richard had a clever idea to connect chocolate with romance. In 1868, his company made a special heart-shaped box of chocolates for Valentine's Day. This was one of the first times chocolate was sold this way.
Building Bournville
The Cadbury factory in Birmingham was getting too small. So, in 1878, Richard and George bought 14 acres (about 57,000 square meters) of land. This land was in the countryside, about four miles south of Birmingham. They opened a new, bigger factory there in 1879.
Over the next few years, they bought even more land. They wanted to create a special place for their workers to live. This became a model village called Bournville. A model village is a community built by a company for its workers. It usually has good housing, schools, and green spaces. The Cadbury brothers believed in providing good living conditions for their employees.
Helping Others
Richard Cadbury was also known for his generosity. He gave a large house called Moseley Hall to the City of Birmingham. This house was used as a special home for children who were recovering from illnesses. It was a place where they could get better and feel strong again.
Richard Cadbury's Legacy
Richard Cadbury passed away on March 22, 1899, in Jerusalem. He was 63 years old. After his death, money from his estate was given to different charities. About £40,000 was shared among various good causes. This included £10,000 for the Temperance Hospital in London.
Richard's daughter, Beatrice Boeke-Cadbury, also did important work. She was an educational reformer. She helped save Jewish children during the Holocaust. The Holocaust was a terrible time when millions of Jewish people were persecuted and killed. For her brave actions, Beatrice was later honored as one of the Righteous Among the Nations. This award recognizes non-Jewish people who risked their lives to save Jews during the Holocaust.
