Richard Garnett was a very smart person who lived from 1835 to 1906. He was a scholar, which means he studied a lot. He was also a librarian, a biographer (someone who writes about other people's lives), and a poet. He worked at the famous British Museum and was in charge of all the printed books there from 1890 to 1899.

Richard Garnett's Life

Richard went to school in a place called Bloomsbury. When he was just 16 years old, he started working at the British Museum in 1851. A friend of his father, Anthony Panizzi, invited him to work there after Richard's father passed away.

In 1863, Richard Garnett married Olivia Narney Singleton. They had six children together. He worked his way up at the British Museum. In 1875, he became the superintendent of the Reading Room. This is where people go to read books and do research.

Becoming a Keeper of Books

In 1881, Richard became the editor of the main catalog of printed books. This was a huge job, organizing all the books. Then, in 1890, he became the "Keeper of Printed Books." This was a very important role, like being the head librarian for all the printed books. He held this job until he retired in 1899.

A Talented Writer

Richard Garnett was also a very busy writer. He translated many works from different languages like Greek, German, Italian, Spanish, and Portuguese. This means he changed books written in those languages into English.

He wrote several books of poetry. He also wrote a book of short stories called The Twilight of the Gods. This book first came out in 1888. He later added more stories to it in 1903.

Richard also wrote biographies about famous people. These included Thomas Carlyle, John Milton, and William Blake. He wrote many articles for encyclopedias too, like the Encyclopædia Britannica and the Dictionary of National Biography.

Other Interests and Legacy

Richard Garnett found and edited some poems by Percy Bysshe Shelley that had not been published before. He also helped to republish another poetry collection. One of his poems, Where Corals Lie, was even turned into music by a famous composer, Sir Edward Elgar.

He was interested in astrology, which is the study of how stars and planets might influence people's lives. He wrote a paper about it in 1880.

In 1901, Richard Garnett was chosen to be a member of the American Philosophical Society. This is a group for very smart people who study different subjects.

Richard Garnett passed away on April 13, 1906. He was buried in Highgate Cemetery in London. He was known for his wide range of knowledge and his many contributions to literature and libraries.
