Richard Henry Dulany was an important American figure known for his love of horses and his role in the American Civil War. He was born on August 10, 1820, and lived until October 31, 1906. He was also a Colonel in the Confederate Army.

His Early Years
Richard Henry Dulany was born in Loudoun County, Virginia, on August 10, 1820. His family had a long history, coming to America from Ireland in the early 1700s.
A Love for Horses
Richard Dulany loved horses and helped create important horse-related events. In 1853, he started the Upperville Colt & Horse Show. This event is the oldest horse show in all of America!
He also founded the Piedmont Fox Hounds in 1840. This is one of the oldest foxhunting groups in the country.
Service During the Civil War
During the American Civil War, Richard Dulany served as a soldier. He first became a captain in Company A of the 6th Virginia Cavalry. Later, he became a Colonel and led the 7th Virginia Cavalry.
Colonel Dulany was wounded in battle several times. He was hurt at Kernstown and again during a fight with General Sheridan. In another battle at Brock's Gap, his right arm was also wounded.
Family Life
Richard Dulany married his cousin, Rebecca Anne Dulany. They had five children together: Mary, Fanny, Johnnie, Hal, and Richard, who was called "Dick."
He lived at a place called Welbourne. His family's descendants still live there today, many generations later.
His Later Years and Death
Richard Henry Dulany passed away in Upperville, Virginia, in 1906. He was buried at the Old Welbourne Cemetery in Bluemont, Virginia.
