Early Life and War Years
Richard Herrmann was born on January 28, 1923. His football journey began early. He played for 1. FC Kattowitz for many years.
During World War II, Richard became a prisoner of war. He was held in England and then in the United States. Later, he was sent back to a camp in Derby, England. Football was played in this camp. Officials from the famous club Derby County heard about his talent. However, Richard wanted to return to Germany as soon as possible.
Football Career After the War
Richard was released in 1947. A friend from the camp helped him move to Frankfurt. There, he joined FSV Frankfurt.
Richard was very skilled with the ball. He also had a powerful and accurate shot. He quickly became a key player for FSV Frankfurt. In 1952, a big Italian club, AC Torino, offered him a lot of money to join them. But Richard decided to stay in Germany because he was married and had a son. Instead of moving, he opened a small shop.
World Cup Victory
Richard Herrmann was part of the West Germany team that won the 1954 FIFA World Cup in Switzerland. This team is often called the "Heroes of Bern."
In the tournament, Richard scored a goal in a match against Hungary. West Germany lost that game 3-8. However, this was the only match Richard played in the entire tournament. He did not play in the final game where West Germany famously beat Hungary to win the World Cup. In total, he played eight matches for the German national team.
Later Life and Legacy
Richard Herrmann stopped playing football in 1958. He was 35 years old and had suffered a serious injury. After his playing career, he briefly coached a team called Seckbach 05.
Sadly, Richard passed away at the young age of 39. He developed a serious health problem that affected his liver. This illness was linked to medical treatments he received during the 1954 World Cup. Many players from that team also faced similar health issues later in life.
Richard Herrmann is remembered as a skilled footballer and a World Cup winner.
