Richard Jupp (1728 – 17 April 1799) was an English architect from the 1700s. An architect is someone who designs buildings. Jupp was especially known for his work on buildings in and around London. For many years, from about 1755 until he died in 1799, he worked as a surveyor for the British East India Company. A surveyor helps plan and oversee building projects.

What Did Richard Jupp Build?

Richard Jupp designed or helped change many important buildings. Here are some of his notable projects:

Manor House: From Home to Library

In 1772, Jupp built the Manor House in Lee, London. It was first built for a rich merchant named Thomas Lucas. Later, in 1796, Sir Francis Baring, who started Barings Bank, bought it. Today, this historic building is a public library. Its beautiful gardens are now a public park called Manor House Gardens. The building is also a Grade II listed building, which means it is protected because of its special history and architecture.

Severndroog Castle: A Special Memorial

In 1784, Jupp designed a unique building called Severndroog Castle. It's located on Shooter's Hill in south-east London. This building is a "folly," which is a building made to look like a castle or ruin but doesn't have a real purpose like defense. Severndroog Castle was built as a memorial to Commodore Sir William James. He was a naval commander and a former chairman of the East India Company.

East India House: A Big Company's Home

One of Jupp's most important projects was the East India House on Leadenhall Street in London. This was the main office for the powerful British East India Company. Jupp worked on rebuilding and expanding it from 1796 to 1799. However, he died before the project was finished. His successor, Henry Holland, completed the work. The building shown in the picture is this expanded East India House.
