Richard Tandy (born March 26, 1948 – died May 1, 2024) was a talented English musician. He was best known as the keyboard player for the famous band Electric Light Orchestra, often called "ELO." His wide range of keyboards, like the Minimoog and piano, were a key part of ELO's unique sound. You can hear his amazing playing on albums such as A New World Record and Out of the Blue.

In 2017, Richard Tandy was honored by being added to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of Electric Light Orchestra.

Richard Tandy's Early Life and Music Career

Richard Tandy was born in Birmingham, England, on March 26, 1948. He went to Moseley School, where he first met Bev Bevan. Bevan would later become a bandmate in ELO.

In 1968, Tandy briefly played with the band The Move. He played the harpsichord on their hit song "Blackberry Way." Later, in 1972, he joined the first live version of Electric Light Orchestra. ELO started as a side project of The Move. Tandy first played bass guitar for ELO, but he soon became their full-time keyboardist.

Working with Jeff Lynne and ELO's Sound

Richard Tandy worked closely with ELO's leader, Jeff Lynne, on many music projects. He helped create songs for the Electric Dreams movie soundtrack. He also contributed to Lynne's solo album Armchair Theatre.

Tandy's keyboards were a very important part of ELO's music. He played many different instruments, including the piano, Minimoog, Clavinet, and Mellotron. He was also good at playing the guitar. Tandy was like Jeff Lynne's right-hand man in the studio. He helped arrange the string sections for ELO's songs, starting with the album Eldorado.

Other Music Projects and ELO Albums

In 1985, Richard Tandy started his own group called the Tandy Morgan Band. They released a concept album called Earthrise.

Tandy played on almost every ELO album. The only one he wasn't on was their very first album, No Answer, from 1971. He also did not play on the 2015 album Alone in the Universe.

In 2012, Tandy joined Jeff Lynne again to record a live performance of ELO's greatest hits. This show was later broadcast on television. He also performed with Lynne for a charity event called Children In Need Rocks in 2013. They played popular ELO songs like “Livin' Thing” and “Mr Blue Sky.” Tandy continued to perform with Jeff Lynne's ELO, including a piano solo on the song One More Time from the 2019 album From Out of Nowhere.

Richard Tandy's Musical Instruments

When Richard Tandy became a full-time keyboardist, he used many different instruments. His early setup included a Minimoog synthesizer and a Wurlitzer electric piano. He also used a grand piano, especially in the studio.

Over time, he added more keyboards to his collection. These included the Hohner clavinet, mellotron, and other synthesizers. He used instruments like the Yamaha CS80, ARP 2600, and Oberheim synthesizers. Tandy also played a harmonium on the song "Kuiama" from the album ELO 2.

Richard Tandy's Personal Life

Richard Tandy was married twice. His second wife was named Sheila. He lived in different places during his life, including Birmingham, France, and Los Angeles. In his later years, he lived in Wales.

Richard Tandy passed away on May 1, 2024, at the age of 76. Jeff Lynne remembered him as "a remarkable musician and friend."
