History of Richmond
Early Settlers and Growth
The first person to settle in Richmond was a carpenter named William A. McConnell. He arrived in 1837 and built the very first building, which was a log cabin. Soon after, in 1838, eight more settlers came to the area. The village grew quickly from then on.
Richmond got its name from Richmond, Vermont, which was the hometown of one of the first settlers. In 1841, the first school was built on McConnell's farm. By 1844, the village was officially mapped out.
Richmond's Early Businesses
William McConnell and Dr. R.R. Stone started a cheese factory in Richmond. After that, other businesses opened, including a creamery (which also made dairy products), more cheese factories, a box factory, a wagon-making shop, and even a pickle factory!
Most of the original buildings in Richmond were built between the mid-1840s and the 1860s. Many of the houses were built in the Greek Revival style, which was popular for farmhouses. Later, some larger homes were built in the Italianate or Second Empire styles. Richmond officially became an incorporated village in 1872.
The Great Fire of 1902
On Christmas Eve in 1902, a big fire swept through Richmond's main business area. It destroyed 20 buildings! This fire was a major setback for the village's economy. Many businesses didn't have enough insurance, so they couldn't afford to rebuild. Because of this, many business owners decided not to reopen. However, Richmond did see another period of building new structures between 1903 and 1905.
Modern Events
Richmond has also hosted exciting events. For example, on June 11–12, 2017, it was the location for the Chicago Super and Sprint Weekend. This was part of the Reebok Spartan Race, which is a challenging obstacle course race.
