Early Life and High School Basketball
Ricky Council IV grew up in Durham, North Carolina. He went to Southern School of Energy and Sustainability for high school. During his senior year, he was a star player. He scored about 23 points in each game. He also grabbed 9.5 rebounds and made five assists per game. Because of his great performance, he was named third-team All-State.
After high school, many colleges wanted Ricky to play for them. He was considered a "three-star recruit." This means he was a highly rated player coming out of high school. Ricky chose to play college basketball for Wichita State. He picked them over offers from many other schools.
College Basketball Career
Ricky started his college journey playing for the Wichita State Shockers. In his first year, he played 21 games. He averaged 7.1 points and 3.4 rebounds. He was even named to the American Athletic Conference (AAC) All-Freshman team. This award goes to the best first-year players in the conference.
In his second year at Wichita State, Ricky played in all 28 games. He started seven of those games. He improved his stats, averaging 12 points, 5.4 rebounds, and 1.1 steals per game. He earned the AAC Sixth Man of the Year award. This award is for the best player who usually comes off the bench. After this season, he thought about joining the NBA draft early. However, he decided to withdraw his name. He then chose to transfer to a different college.
Ricky decided to transfer to the Arkansas Razorbacks. He chose Arkansas over offers from other big schools. In his junior year, he continued to play very well. He was named second-team All-Southeastern Conference (SEC). This is another big award for top players in a strong college league. He averaged 16.1 points, 3.6 rebounds, and 2.3 assists per game. After the 2023 NCAA tournament, Ricky announced he would enter the 2023 NBA draft. He decided to skip his final year of college eligibility.
Professional Basketball Career
Ricky Council IV was not chosen in the 2023 NBA draft. However, he still got a chance to play in the NBA. On July 1, 2023, he signed a special two-way contract with the Philadelphia 76ers. A two-way contract means a player can play for both the NBA team and its minor league team. The minor league team for the 76ers is the Delaware Blue Coats.
Ricky was briefly waived by the 76ers in October 2023. But he quickly signed a new two-way contract with them just five days later. On January 2, 2024, Ricky made his official NBA debut. It was in a game where the 76ers won against the Chicago Bulls.
On February 10, he had one of his best games. He scored a career-high 19 points and grabbed 10 rebounds. This happened in a game against the Washington Wizards. On April 13, 2024, Ricky signed a standard contract with the 76ers. This showed that the team believed in his talent and wanted him to be a full-time player.
