High School Basketball Journey
Ricky Ledo spent his first two years of high school at Bishop Hendricken High School in Warwick, Rhode Island. He then moved to other schools to continue his basketball journey. These included St. Andrew's School and Notre Dame Preparatory School. He also attended South Kent School.
At St. Andrew's, his team finished second in their conference. At Notre Dame, he helped his team reach the Prep National Finals. In his senior year at South Kent, he was named a Second Team All-Conference player.
College Plans and Challenges
Ledo was considered one of the top college basketball players in the country. ESPN ranked him as the 21st best prospect. He was also chosen as a McDonald's All-American, which is a big honor for high school basketball players.
He planned to play for Providence College in his home state. However, the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) decided he couldn't play. This was because he didn't have enough academic credits. He stayed at the school hoping to play later, but the NCAA never allowed him to. Because of this, Ledo never played a single game for Providence.
Starting a Professional Career
Joining the NBA: Dallas Mavericks
Even though he didn't play in college, Ricky Ledo decided to enter the 2013 NBA draft. The Milwaukee Bucks picked him as the 43rd player overall. His draft rights were then traded to the Philadelphia 76ers and finally to the Dallas Mavericks.
Ledo signed his first NBA contract with the Mavericks in July 2013. During his time with the Mavericks, he also played for their minor league team, the Texas Legends. This team is part of the NBA Development League, now called the G-League. He played in 16 games for the Mavericks over two seasons. In February 2015, the Mavericks released him. He then rejoined the Texas Legends.
A Short Time with the New York Knicks
In March 2015, Ledo signed a short contract with the New York Knicks. He played well in some games, even scoring a career-high 21 points in one match. He signed another contract to finish the season with the Knicks. However, he was released by the team in July 2015.
Playing for the Reno Bighorns
After leaving the Knicks, Ledo joined the Reno Bighorns in the NBA Development League in October 2015. He played very well for the Bighorns. He averaged over 20 points per game.
Because of his strong performance, he was chosen to play in the NBA D-League All-Star Game in 2016. This showed he was one of the best players in the league.
Playing Around the World
International Basketball Adventures
After his time in the NBA G-League, Ricky Ledo began playing for teams in different countries. In April 2016, he played for Santeros de Aguada in Puerto Rico. He then moved to Turkey, signing with Yeşilgiresun Belediye for the 2016–17 season.
Ledo had a great season in Turkey. He became the top scorer in the Turkish Basketball Super League, averaging 21.1 points per game. After this, he played for Baskonia in Spain and Anadolu Efes in Turkey.
More G-League and Global Teams
In January 2018, Ledo returned to the NBA G-League to play for the Wisconsin Herd. He continued to show his scoring ability there. After the G-League season, he played in Puerto Rico again for Vaqueros de Bayamón.
He then played for Pallacanestro Reggiana in Italy, where he was also a top scorer. Ledo continued his international career by playing for teams in China, Poland, and back in Turkey. He also played in Taiwan and Puerto Rico again.
In recent years, Ledo has played for teams like Guangdong Southern Tigers in China, Al Riyadi in Lebanon, and Semt77 Yalovaspor in Turkey. He also played for Anhui Wenyi in China and Al Muharraq before joining the Blackwater Bossing in the Philippines. As of December 2024, he plays for the Beirut Club in Lebanon.
