A Look Back: The Playhouse's Story

The Ridgefield Playhouse first opened its doors in December 2000. A famous guitarist named Jose Feliciano performed on its opening night!

Before it became the Playhouse, this building was the auditorium for the old Ridgefield High School. It was designed in the 1940s by an architect named Cass Gilbert Jr. His father, Cass Gilbert, was also a very famous architect. He designed important buildings like the Supreme Court Building and the Woolworth Building.

When it was still the high school auditorium, it was a busy place for the community. Students put on school plays and performances there. People also gathered for town meetings and other local events. During World War II, even a famous conductor named Arturo Toscanini performed there for the people of Ridgefield.
