Rieth's Railroad History
Rieth became important because of the railroad. The Oregon–Washington Railroad and Navigation Company built new shops and terminals here. They named the station after the Rieth family, who were early settlers in the area.
A Key Railroad Stop
In 1907, a special railway line called the Pilot Rock Line was built. This line connected to the main railroad in Rieth. It was once known as the Umatilla Central Railroad.
Later, the main railroad yards moved from Rieth to a place called Hinkle. These yards are now owned by Union Pacific.
The Post Office in Rieth
In 1917, the United States Post Office opened an office in Rieth. At first, it was accidentally spelled "Reith." But the United States Board on Geographic Names quickly fixed the spelling to "Rieth." The post office served the community until it closed in 1971.
