Estatesgeneral
On May 5, 1789, the Estates-General met in Versailles. People with conservative ideas often sat on the right side of the room.

When we talk about right-wing ideas in politics, we are usually talking about people who support conservatism. This means they often like to keep things the way they are or follow traditions. They believe that society's customs and traditions are valuable lessons from the past.

People who are very right-wing are sometimes called "reactionary." They might want to go back to how things were in the past. Or, they might strongly disagree with new left-wing ideas that are becoming popular.

Right-wing thinkers often believe that society is like a living thing, which they call an "organic society." They think that the way society has developed over time is important and should be protected.

What Right-Wing Means

Right-wing ideas usually focus on certain beliefs:

  • Tradition: They value old customs and ways of doing things.
  • Authority: They believe in strong leadership and rules.
  • Order: They like stability and a clear structure in society.

In some countries, like the United States, right-wing groups also often support a capitalist economy. This means they believe businesses should be mostly free from government control. They also often support social liberalism, which means they believe in individual freedoms.

Right-Wing Leaders

Many leaders throughout history have been seen as right-wing. For example, in the United States, Ronald Reagan was a very popular president who held many right-wing views. He believed in less government involvement in the economy.
