Rima Michelle Berns-McGown is a Canadian politician and writer. She was a member of the Ontario New Democratic Party. From 2018 to 2022, she represented the area of Beaches—East York in the Legislative Assembly of Ontario. This is like the provincial parliament where laws are made.
She decided not to run for re-election in 2022. After her term, Mary-Margaret McMahon from the Liberal Party took her place.
Early Life and Education
Rima Berns-McGown was born in South Africa. Her family moved to Canada when she was four years old. They left South Africa because they did not agree with Apartheid. This was a system of unfair rules that separated people based on their race. Rima grew up in Montreal, Quebec.
Political Career
Rima Berns-McGown was elected to the Ontario Provincial Parliament in the 2018 election. She won against the Liberal politician Arthur Potts.
She was part of Ontario's first ever Black Caucus. This group included other politicians like Laura Mae Lindo, Faisal Hassan, Jill Andrew, and Kevin Yarde.
Rima Berns-McGown decided not to run for re-election in 2022. She explained that being a politician was very demanding for her. She chose to retire after one term to focus on her well-being.
Other Activities
Rima Berns-McGown is also an author. She wrote a book called Muslims in the Diaspora: The Somali Communities of London and Toronto.
