Rinaldo Wayne Walcott, born in 1965, is a Canadian professor and writer. He was born in Barbados and has lived most of his life in Canada. Specifically, he has spent much time in Toronto.

Walcott is currently a professor and chair of Africana and American Studies. He works at the State University of New York (SUNY) at Buffalo. He also holds a special position there called the Carl V. Granger Chair. Before this, he was a professor at the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education. He also directed the Women and Gender Studies Institute at the University of Toronto. He was connected to the Cinema Studies Institute at the University of Toronto too. Earlier in his career, Walcott was a professor at York University. From 2002 to 2007, he held an important research position. This was the Canada Research Chair of Social Justice and Cultural Studies.

Walcott's studies focus on several important areas. These include Black studies, Canadian studies, and cultural studies. He also explores gender studies and diaspora studies. His work helps us understand different cultures and identities. It also looks at how people from various backgrounds experience the world.

Walcott's Academic Work

In 1997, Walcott published a book called Black Like Who?. This book grew out of his PhD research. His research looked at popular culture. He explored how rap music in the early 1990s became a strong social and political force. This happened across North America.

Exploring Black Canadian Identity

The essays in Black Like Who? cover many topics. They discuss poetry, literature, and diaspora studies. They also include film criticism. These discussions are key to understanding Black spaces and places in Canada. Walcott's work helps us see how Black people have shaped and been shaped by the Canadian landscape.
