Rio Grande de la Costa is a small village, also called a hamlet. It is located in the Valdez Municipality in Sucre State, Venezuela.
You can reach this village by boat. The journey starts from the Gulf of Paria. You travel through a water channel called the Rio Grande inlet. The village is about 34.6 kilometers from Güiria.
About 40 people live in Rio Grande de la Costa. The village has a long history, almost 400 years old! You can still see its old colonial past. Look for the beautiful old houses in Plaza Bolivar and other historic buildings.

Rio Grande de la Costa is part of the Cristobal Colon Parish. This area is in the Paria Peninsula of Sucre state. It is also in the Valdez Municipality.
Most of the land here is mountainous. There are also some small valleys. Rivers flow from these mountains into the sea. A large part of the area is covered by thick rainforest.
Where is Rio Grande Located?
- To the North: It borders the Sucre parish. This parish belongs to the Arismendi Municipality. The border is along the mountain range of the Paria Peninsula.
- To the South: It is next to the Golfo de Paria.
- To the East: It borders the Dragons Mouth and the Gulf of Paria. For a few kilometers, it also borders the waters of Trinidad. This marks the end of the peninsula and the start of international territory.
- To the West: It borders the Bideau Parish. This parish is also part of the Valdez Municipality.
Rio Grande Cove
This small bay is home to several fishing families. A small river flows into the cove, providing water for the people. The bay opens towards the south. The beach here is about 100 meters long.
Weather and Climate
Rio Grande de la Costa is in a tropical zone. This means it has a tropical climate. Winds from the northeast, coming from the sea, also affect the weather.
The average temperature is 26°C (79°F). During the day, the highest temperature is usually around 34°C (93°F). At night, it cools down to about 20°C (68°F). The air is very humid, especially during the wet season. Humidity can reach an average of 85%.
The area gets about 211 cubic centimeters (or 83 inches) of rain each year. Most of this rain falls from June to December. During this time, short but heavy downpours often cause floods. In the North Range mountains, rainfall can be even higher, up to 381 cubic centimeters (or 150 inches). During the dry season, the central part of the territory can experience droughts. Luckily, Rio Grande de la Costa is outside the hurricane zone.
