Güiria is an important city in Venezuela. It is the capital of Valdez Municipality in the state of Sucre. The city was founded a long time ago, on December 8, 1767.
Güiria played a big role in history. It was a starting point for the military campaigns that helped South America become independent from Spain. It was also where the 1901 Venezuelan Civil War began.
Today, Güiria is the third-largest city in its state, with about 40,000 people living there. It has a very important harbour. This is the only harbour in Venezuela that is directly on the open Atlantic Ocean, not the Caribbean Sea. Güiria is also a key economic center for the Paria Peninsula. This is because it is close to large natural gas fields in the Gulf of Paria. Many companies are exploring for gas there.

Güiria's Economy and Industries
The economy of Güiria is growing thanks to the natural gas industry. A big project called the Gran Mariscal de Ayacucho Industrial Complex (CIGMA) is being built here. It is developed by Petróleos de Venezuela (PDVSA), which is Venezuela's state oil company.
The main goal of this project is to help the state of Sucre grow economically. It also aims to provide natural gas to other states like Nueva Esparta, Monagas, and Anzoátegui. In the future, this gas system will connect to the rest of the country. This will help supply gas to more places and even allow Venezuela to sell gas to other countries.
Besides natural gas, Güiria also produces other important goods. Farmers grow coconuts, cocoa, and tobacco. They also grow root vegetables called tubers. Fishing is another big industry, and people also raise cattle in the area.
Transportation in Güiria
Güiria has important ways for people and goods to travel:
- The International Fishing Port of Güiria is a busy harbour.
- The Cristóbal Colón Airport helps people travel by air.
Because Güiria is very close to the island of Trinidad, there is a lot of trade by sea. Ships often travel between Güiria and Trinidad and Tobago, carrying goods back and forth.
