The Rio Plata sprat (scientific name: Platanichthys platana) is a very small fish. It belongs to the Dorosomatidae family. This fish lives only in South America. It is the only type of fish in its group, called a genus.

Where It Lives

The Rio Plata sprat is found in freshwater environments. It swims in the open water, not usually near the bottom or the shore. Even though it's in freshwater, it often lives in brackish water. This means the water is a little bit salty, like where rivers meet the ocean. This fish prefers warm, subtropical climates.

How Big It Gets

The biggest Rio Plata sprat ever found was about 6.7 centimeters (or about 2.63 inches) long. Most of these fish are around 5 centimeters (or about 1.96 inches) long.

Where You Can Find It

You can find the Rio Plata sprat in parts of South America. It lives in areas like Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Uruguay, and Argentina. They especially like the slightly salty waters of lagoons, estuaries (where rivers meet the sea), and the lower parts of rivers.
